A person suffering from scurvy usually has gaping unhealed wounds along with a really weak immune system. Loss of teeth is also a common occurrence as the gums are severely weakened due to the deficiency of it. Scurvy may also lead to death hence a person must be careful about the intake of it as its deficiency may be very hazardous and fatal.
One has to be careful as to how the food is cooked. Even if the food materials are high in content, if they are not cooked properly and heated too much then the vitamin may get destroyed. Heat destroys Vitamin C so one has to be sure that the food is not over heated. Also smokers suffer from deficiencies more than normal humans and thus need a higher intake of this vitamin. This helps in preventing the lung diseases to some extent.
Vitamin C deficiency symptoms is not a very common phenomenon. People in the west hardly suffer from it as their normal intake of vitamin C exceeds the necessary levels. A deficiency is also very easy to cure and treat and does not cause permanent damage except in the later stages of scurvy which is fatal.
This vitamin forms an important part of our diet and should not be considered as unimportant. One must ensure that he or she is consuming seventy five to ninety milligrams of it in order to prevent a deficiency.
